Dea - I knew some of that - a couple of years back they had a TV series here called "The Worst Jobs in History" or something like that, hosted by a scruffy looking guy called Tony (I think) and one week he did a fuller's job - fulling is needed to degrease cloth - so they put the raw cloth in a tub, along with (I suppose) some fullers earth, and then filled the tub with the "stuff" and Tony stomped on the cloth for abt half an hour. Apparently, in the late 19th century, there was quite a need for urine, and they paid 4d a bucket-full for it - even collected it at no cost to the seller.

;-) :-D :-D :-D

They did (and still do) use it for all sorts of things - in the cloth industry, the leather industry, in medecines and in make-up etc but it DID give me a laugh in this case

I thought it a bit odd, but they did some odd things back then.

I'd just been watching a rerun of Dimbleby's Age Of something or other, and they were going on about the stained glass windows in Canterbury Cathedral. Since it was an important building, they only used the very best urine in dissolving the pigment to paint on the glass - as I'm sure most of you know, the very best urine was that of a pre-pubescent red-headed boy.

Many thanks for info. I do wish they would all stay in one place. I have a start now soI can visit these parishes when I am well enough, once again thank you. There is very little info handed down and no older living relatives to ask so this info is a surprising start

Have you got a birth certificate for one of his sons or the name of his wife?

Thank-you

Joan Report 30 Sep 2013 20:57

Looking for information on James Davies born about 1825. He is at 16 Mason St, possibly this address is in Oswaldtwistle, and may have been born in Blackburn. At some point he is in Eccleston nr Chorley about 1859 . Can anyone help me find him and his parents. I have his sons living with him in 1891 at Mason St and found this info quite difficult to find given the surname. Any help appreciated
