Chrissie2394 Report 22 Sep 2013 23:32

In 1911 I have William Key born 1873 at Barlow Derbyshire at H M Prison The Royal Deaf and Dumb Institution. Not sure if I've misread what FMP say but I thought they had the records of prisoners up to 1929. Can someone tell me if only some of the records are available only I cannot find William Key in the prisoner records.

Thank you

Chris

Chris, there are quite a number of mentions in the newspaper archives of a William Key (or may be more than one with the same name) in Derbyshire who seemed to keep the police busy with relatively minor offences.

Can you tell me more about your William (address, occupation, etc) and I'll see what I can find.
EDIT: See from the 1911 that he's a coal miner hewer)

In the 1911 census my Will is shown as married. It looks like he married Emma White at St Lawrence church, Barlow in 1901.

Think this is her in 1901

I'd love to find out more about William. Could anyone tell me if there was probate for either William or Emma. I believe William died in 1940 and Emma possibly in 1948 however age is a bit out but the Emma Key death was not in Chesterfield where I expected but in Belper district.

The marriage details safc found for me have left me with another query. Her fathers name is given as Mark Haslam. Her previous marriage:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Mar 1882 (>99%)
>>>Bate Emma Chesterfield 7b 800
DAVENPORT Susannah Chesterfield 7b 800
GAMBLE Robert Chesterfield 7b 800
>>>White George Chesterfield 7b 800

I cannot find a previous marriage Haslam to Bate. Any advice please.

This is on one Public Family Tree on ancestry ....................

it does look as though it was taken from the marriage certificate ro Parish Register

Marriage to George White
1880 14 Nov — Age: 21
Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
St. Stephen Church, Sheffield 9c 726, witnessed by her brother-in-law and sister, John and Sarah Oldfield

SylviaInCanada Report 25 Sep 2013 05:32

You might have to buy the 2 marriage certificates in order to sort this one out!

What is a possibility .................. could she have discovered that Mark Haslam was not her real father, assumed the real father's surname, but then put Mark's name on the certificate??

The certificate for her marriage to Will Key should show her previous names. Although I note that the record on familysearch taken from the Parish Register only shows Mark Haslem, and states that she was widowed.

Chrissie2394 Report 25 Sep 2013 20:20

Thank you so much for your reply Sylvia. This must be Sarah and George who married in 1880 in the 1881 census

WHITE, George Address: Hare & Hound Inn, Barlow Common, Barlow

WHITE, George Head Married M 31 1850 Coal Miner
Barlow, Derbyshire
WHITE, Emma Wife Married F 21 1860
Barlow, Derbyshire
BOOKER, Godfrey Lodger Married M 38 1843 Coal Miner
Barlow, Derbyshire

As you can see Emma was born in Barlow which ties in with Emma who married Will Key. They were also at the Hare and Hounds pub which is where William Key and his parents were in 1901.

I have tried to find two George White's with wives named Emma in the 1891 census but can only find one.

Having been able to confirm through the census records that Emma did have a sister named Sarah and I have found her marriage to John Oldfield. This confirms the information you found on the public tree. I'm beginning to think that the marriage I found in 1882 in Chesterfield district was another couple and perhaps one of them died prior to the 1891 census.

Thank you so much safc for that info.

It's now obvious that the marriage I found was not the first marriage of Will Key's wife Emma.

Thanks everyone for your help.
