would be most grateful if anyone could shed some light, or point me in the right direction to find parents of Ellen Teal. She married William McLean in 1844 in Manchester and her fathers name is recorded as Thomas Teal. He could have been born anywhere, so how do I know if I've got the right one? I've looked at some in Yorkshire area, but they don't seem right and I'm going round in circles! Thanks

Hello Judith, have you found Ellen on the 1841?
What was her father's occupation, and who were the witnesses on the marriage?

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have taken your advice and looked for the marriage of George first as I thought that might be easier, but i can't find a marriage! I can find a reference in 1841 census to a George Teal with wife Mary (both 32) and a 12 year old son Thomas. That would fit nicely with George's father Thomas, but again, no info about Thomas and Mary the parents! Where/when they were married and her maiden name. Cannot find any info on Jane Atkinson Teal either - did think that would be slightly easier, but no! Thought the Atkinson may have been mothers maiden name, but can't find a marriage of a Mary Atkinson and ThomasTeal. any other suggestions???

from ancestry
Manchester, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1930 (Cathedral) about Hugh Burns
Name: Hugh Burns Marriage Date: 6 Sep 1835 Parish: Manchester, St Mary, St Denys and St George Spouse's Name: Jane Atkinson Teal Archive Roll: 701
Witnesses were Thomas Parry and George Turvey
Thomas Parry was probably a "professional witness" as his name appears on several records in the Parish Register ................ that means someone who was paid a small amount to witness marriages

All this information is really helpful and I do appreciate it. I think I must be limiting my searching to GR which has returned a lot of blanks which you folks have filled for me. I am really hoping I can now find Thomas Teal and his wife (parents of George, Jane, Harriett, Mary and Ellen) as somewhere we think there is a 'foreign strain'. We have a picture of my husbands great Grandmother (Mary Jane McLean 1846-1912, Ellen Teals daughter) who looks quite dark, perhaps Indian. Also in the picture is his grandmother (Gertrude Bostock 1877-1939), also dark skinned, but other siblings are not dark!). This is a pattern repeated in my husbands own family as two siblings are darker than the other two and again the same in his sisters family. So far all relatives seem to have been born in the Manchester area, and its all very intriguing.
If any of you can suggest how to research (i.e. which sites) before the censuses, it would be most helpful. Thanks a lot.

It would seem that George Turvey may have been known to the family, as he appears as a witness on the two marriages posted above.............which were in different Churches. The 'pro' witnesses alluded to by Sylvia tended to be associated with a single Church
