1841

Name: Robt Vannan
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1801
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland

Civil Parish: Kilsyth
County: Stirlingshire
Address: Main Street
Parish Number: 483
Household Members:
Name Age
Henry Wilson 50
Mary Wilson 42
Willm Whyte 19
Jean Wallace 72 <<< b. Stirlingshire
Robt Vannan 40

If you look on Familysearch.org There are some Vannan christenings with parents Ebenezer Vannan and Jean Wallace. None for Robert though - so perhaps they were in Ireland for a bit?

It wasn't uncommon for widowed ladies to be listed on the 1841 census using their maiden surname.

You could get his wife's death certificate to narrow the timescale for his death .

This looks like the death of Robert Vannan (b. 1798). It will give you the names of all spouses and the names of his parents including his mother's maiden surname if the informant knew the details.

Sorry but I wouldn't eliminate that William just because he still appears in the 'phone book. I know many widows who didn't change the entry after their husband had died.

My grandfather was William Vannan of 5 Hillpark Avenue, Edinburgh and he died in 1974. I am just starting to put together the family tree with my mother Sheila (Jessie) Vannan born 2/2/31
I would be interested in any information about my grandfather's family that you can provide
Thank you

Patricia, click on Pamela's name and send her a personal message as she may not be looking for replies now.

It certainly looks like you are researching the same family as Pamela as you have confirmed that that death that I had suggested for William was correct. As I said at the time, it wasn't unusual for widows not to change the telephone directory entry.

As there is a fair bit of information on this thread, I would suggest that if you need help with your Vanman family, it could be done on this thread. Perhaps others would disagree but probably best not to duplicate searches.

Good luck with your research.
