For a long time now I have been looking for my Grandfather in the 1881 Census without any luck. He was born 1850 in Lyndhurst, Hampshire,England.
In 1871 census at 9 Manington Place Holdenhurst boarder aged 21 years a Groom but interesting Stephen Stevens aged 29 head of house was a painter employing 3 men and his wife Mary aged 26 was born Lyndhurst
In 1891 census was living with wife of one year at 11 Romsey Rd, St Thomas, Winchester Occupation House Painter (Journeyman).. However age is given as 46 b. 1845 Lyndhurst, he was actualy aged 41.
I have a vague recollection that he had a Army pension of some sort so wondering if he was abroad at that time, maybe in the Boer war.
Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers Rod Macey

Firstly thanks to all who have replied to my question on Frederick Macey born 1850 Lyndhurst Hampshire.
Vera - yes this is is what I have from the 1891 census and it all ties up.
Flip - Yes I somehow got it wrong in the 1871 census thanks for pointing it out. However if you look he is next door at number 10 Mannington Place a boarder at the Laidlaw household, along with his brother Charles correct age and born Lyndhurst occupation correct as a Taylor. Frederick me thinks lodged there but worked for Stephen Stevens who was a painter, Frederick is given as a Groom which must be an error.
Susan - Yes I found this incorrect one years ago and led me a fine dance at the time but thanks anyway.
Sylvia - Thanks but see my response to Flip.
