Help with Joseph Dearlove

Hello people,

Wondering if anyone can help me out with this one. I have a Joseph Dearlove b.1771-d.1846 in my tree. He married Elizabeth Woodhead b.1781-d.1853. They both lived in Marylebone, London/Middlesex and went on to have children, naturally.

Here's my question or dilemma? In the 1841 Census, Joseph's place of birth is filled in as 'Foreign' and his wife is just as bad, as she doesn't even bother writing anything for her place of birth. Is there any way of finding out exactly where Joseph was from?

Any help/suggestions that can be given, would be great!

Kind Regards,
Rachel

Does Elizabeth give place of birth as Nottinghamshire on 1851

GlitterBaby Report 16 Sep 2013 20:02

1841 they were asked if born in county or not and she has put N for No

Who is the Sarah Woodhead - a witness on the marriage

On the original there is an entry for Elizabeth in birthplace but it's too smudged to read.

Thanks for everyone's reply. Sarah Woodhead was a possible lead for me awhile ago, so that must be her sister!!!

And here is a list of Joseph's & Elizabeth's children, the ones that I know of, at least:

Elizabeth Dearlove b.03/04/1804 in Marylebone, Westminster, London
George Dearlove b.10/04/1816 in Marylebone, Westminster, London
Henry Dearlove b.11/11/1817 in Marylebone, Westminster, London
Joseph Dearlove b. 28/01/1820 in Marylebone, Westminster, London
George Dearlove b. 28/01/1820 in Marylebone, Westminster, London (this is my direct line)
Edward Dearlove b.25/10/1822 in Marylebone, Westminster, London
Thomas Dearlove b.25/10/1822 in Marylebone, Westminster, London

So there's no way of finding out what country Joseph is from?

According to his burial (available on ancestry), he was aged 79 when he died in 1846 .......... so his birth is more likely to have been 1767, as shown on the burial record

London, England, Deaths and Burials, 1813-1980 about Joseph Dearlove

Name: Joseph Dearlove
Record Type: Burial
Estimated Death Date: abt 1846
Burial Date: 10 Mar 1846
Age: 79
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1767
Parish or Poor Law Union: Saint Marylebone
Borough: Westminster
Register Type: Parish Register

Remember that ages on the 1841 Census were supposed to be round down to the nearest 5 for all persons over the age of 15.

I notice that there are several Public Family Trees on ancestry that have the same Joseph Dearlove ........... and none seem to have found his parents.

The 1841 Census has been interpreted as meaning born in "Foreign Parts" .................. that could be anywhere in the world, and possibly means that his father was in the military and serving overseas. Many wives accompanied their husbands overseas.

No, not with the info from 1841 alone. And remember the age could be up to 5 years out as well, as ages were rounded down on that census.

His burial gives a different age:

Joseph Dearlove
Record Type: Burial
Estimated Death Date: abt 1846
Burial Date: 10 Mar 1846
Age: 79
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1767
Parish or Poor Law Union: Saint Marylebone
Borough: Westminster
Register Type: Parish Register

Thanks you two!

And yeah, I didn't think that perhaps his Dad could have been in the military. Hmm. On mundia someone said he was born in Maine, USA. I sent a message to ask how they come to this conclusion, but nothing back yet. :(

Thanks anyways, maybe look around for Dearlove's in old wars. Maybe I'll get lucky.

but that's only if he was born in the UK

and 2 censuses say he was born in "foreign parts"

I note that he is shown as Trader on one census, and on a couple of the baptisms ............... I wonder if his father was overseas as a planter or some such?

Rachel

Rachel Report 21 Sep 2013 21:20

He's defiantly foreign, Jax. But thanks for the look up.

And he's on two sets of Census, Sylvia? I can only see him on the 1841 Census. What's a planter? *gasps* Not a plantation, surely?
