Ray54911040 Report 15 Sep 2013 16:03

A fresh pair of eyes required please as this one has me beat all hands up, I have tried all permutations (known to me I may add) and the family have proved very, very elusive on the 1911 census, not asking for a 1911 look up as I have FMP subscription
and if any kind member can locate this family and point me in the right direction I would be very, very grateful, thank you.

Parents:
Charles Frederick Morgan born Birmingham 11th July 1874/1941 (a Carter 1901 & after #2 child a Tube Drawer/Worker)
Eliza Ann Ashforth born Birmingham Dec Q 1875/1927.

The two "known" children were.

Millicent Elsie Morgan baptised 12th Feb 1901.
Albert Charles born 16th Oct 1907.

1901 census the family are in Hooper Street, Birmingham, Millicent is enumerated as Mary E (I think) whilst she was baptised and recorded as Millicent Elsie (Passing away from TB in 1927)

When Albert Charles (the 2nd known child) was born the family lived just across the boundary from Birmingham to Smethwick, and his birth was registered as born back of 17 Waterloo Road.

When the next child was born (after 1911 census) Charles Frederick 23rd Aug 1913 the family was just across the boundary back in Birmingham in 4 Beaumont Terrace, Lodge Road, All Saints, Birmingham.

A 1911 census address search of both Waterloo Road Road & Lodge Road, proved fruitless again, there were only a few back of in Waterloo Road, and no Beaumont Terrace listed in Lodge Road (On find my past at least)

A search of all known siblings to the children's parents also proved fruitless as the family was not living with any family members.

There is a "possible" Albert as a boarder at, but no sign of his sibling Millicent.

RG number: RG14
Piece: 17927
Reference: RG14PN17927 RG78PN1093 RD383 SD3 ED17 SN230
Registration District: Kings Norton
Sub District: Edgbaston
Enumeration District: 17
Parish: Edgbaston
Address: 5 Warrick Terrace Bell Road Edgbaston Birmingham
County: Worcestershire

MORGAN, Albert Boarder M 4 1907 Warwick Birmingham. but I have no knowledge of the people looking after Albert.

Most puzzling, a forum member suggested a possible emigration, but if so it was a very short stay.

Kind regards.

Ray

Yes, the address matches the baptism in Christ Church, Summerfield on the 12th February 1901 Glitterbaby. transcription error possibly, but the address and occupation on baptism match 100%

There is always the chance they did not fill the form in or were missed

The 1911 census and the suffragettes
Frustrated with the government’s refusal to grant women the vote, a large number of women boycotted the 1911 census by refusing to be counted. There were two forms of protest. In the first, the women (or their husbands) refused to fill in the form, often recording their protest on the household schedule. In the second, women evaded the census by staying away from their home for the whole night, and so did not lodge their protest on the household schedule. In both cases, any details relating to individual women in the households will be missing from the census. For the family historian, a refusal to fill in the form (accompanied by a protest statement) at least registers the presence of a woman, or women, in the household. But the women who evaded the count by leaving their home for the night are entirely untraceable via the census. The exact number of women who boycotted the census is not known, though some people have estimated that it may be as many as several thousand.

Have you checked the other Morgan/Ashforth births after the census?

Charles and Eliza appear to be in New Spring Street in 1920 in Electoral Roles.

Was Charles in the Army? Appears to be a private in R W R in 1919

you are probably aware that the address's you have given are only a very small distance away from each other.
Waterloo Rd (17) if memory recalls would be more or less right next to the waterloo public house, could they have lived at the back of one of the shops?
Could Millicent have been away possibly due to her illness for you state the area also of Summerfield, could there have been a hospital/similar for her to be in? For i beleive New Spring Street also came under Summerfield, so it seem like all the mentioned address's link somewhere between the lines.
Hope this little information is of some help.

Addition - you say Millicent.E passed away in 1927 same year as Elsie (mother) is this correct ? for on Freecen can only find a death for a Millicent R Morgan in 1927 in Birmingham. Have you the correct family for have also found a Millicent.E marrying in 1920 into the name Mart. hence 3 children all born Derby.

Ray54911040 Report 15 Sep 2013 23:38

Millicent remained single until her death, passing away at home, she was a nurse in a sanitarium, she died of TB sadly. her mother Eliza Ann passed away later the same year.

The Millicent R registered in 1927 was a transcription error as I have the death certificate for Millicent Elsie (spinster)

Andrew, yes I have those births thank you. was Charles in the army? very doubtful, but not 100% sure, on the births of his last 4 children he was employed as a tube worker/drawer.

Brummie46, yes, aware of near distance of Waterloo road, to Lodge Road, but I have little knowledge of Waterloo Road, Lodge Road to New Spring Street is i guess 15 minutes walk away, I cannot find a link between the addresses, or none that i know of, but as you say there may well be.

Thank you all kindly for your input, I guess the family did not register themselves on the census, or they were just missed off ?

Kind regards.

The Millicent E. Morgan marriage that Brummie46 found is probably Millicent Ellen Morgan born 1899 in Derby.

Her death as Millicent E. Mart gives a birth year of 1899 which ties in.
