If you need any more help with Alexander or his family then just add it onto this thread and we'll see what we can find.

I see what you mean Gins......It clearly reads "Isolation Hospital" on the FMP version because it gives you the whole page.

But not on the Ancestry version.

ISOLATION HOSPITAL
As far back as 1790 there was a smallpox house at Summerhurst. Just over a century later the Hospital Committee of the Kingsclere District Council found it necessary to isolate people with infectious diseases by having portable huts and tents in the family's gardens. However, it appears that this was not too successful as in 1898 the Committee decided to purchase a large cottage in open country on the outskirts of Ecchinswell as an isolation hospital. Mrs Crane was employed "to reside there on the best terms they can make with her but not to exceed 6/- per week." An old four wheel horse buggy was purchased to transport infected persons to hospital. The late Miss Win Thumbwood spent some time there when she had diphtheria and spent some of her time chopping wood.

The most likely birth for Frederick Mandeville (given the age of his spouse) may be:

Frederick John Mandeville, birth reg'd 1853 Oct-Nov-Dec in Shoreditch London

There is an entry on the 1861 census that would fit - by then, FJM's mother had remarried to Daniel Balgarnie, a goldsmith:

Spouse's Name: Mary M Balgarnie

Nadia, the reason people ask questions is so they can look at the records themselves as a basis from which to work. Also, don't forget that "please" and "thank you" go a long way to gaining assistance on these boards.

There are numerous mentions of Ecchinswell House in the newspaper archives, here's just one:

Headline: NEWBURY.
Publication:Reading Mercury
Publication date:Saturday 02 May 1903

Article text:
"Fire at Ecchinswell House . —The Volunteer Fire Brigade were summoned at 5:35 yesterday (Friday) morning to a fire which had broken out at Ecchinswell House, the residence of Mr. T. H. Lawrence. It was found that fire had originated in the harness-room"

Reading the article suggests that no-one was harmed and the fire was confined to outbuildings. Mr Lawrence is mentioned in several other articles.

There is quite a bit about the building itself on Google, perseverence may yield some results as to it's use.

On the census it states 'Isolation Hospital' at the bottom left of the page that Choccy posted

Edit: Next to the first person listed on the same page (above) it has the address as: 'Ecchinswell Home'

I wonder if it might be possible to associate the house with a charity?

Mary Manderville may be Mary Pridgeon b Gosberton approx 1856:

1861 Mary J Pridgeon d of John, Mary b abt 1856 in Grimoldby, Lincolnshire
1871Mary Pridgeon b abt 1854 Servant in Scredington, Lincolnshire
1881 Mary J. Pridgeon b abt 1854 Servant in St George, London

Marriages Jun 1884
Cooley James St. Giles 1b 885
Howell Eliza St Giles 1b 885
MANDEVILLE Frederick John St Giles 1b 885
Pridgeon Mary Jane B St. Giles 1b 885

1891Mary Mandeville b abt 1853 Servant in Hammersmith, London

I'll see if I can find anything on Frederick Mandeville.
