My 2xg grandparents Joseph Norman & Sarah Coxon were married in Uttoxeter 13.6.1836.
According to a newspaper report of the wedding they had previously been married according to the rites of the Catholic church.
The Catholic church of St Mary Uttoxeter didn´t open until 1839, so where would they have married the 1st time?
Anyone who knows the area & may have a suggestion?
Don´t even know which of them was Catholic, although I suspect it was Sarah.

It almost sounds as though they had two ceremonies, but I can't imagine how that would come about..........

Yes Reggie, that´s what I thought.
I know that all marriages had to take place in the Church of England at one time & wondered if that was the reason i.e. the Catholic one wasn´t recognised.
The newspaper report was added to an Ancestry tree by a distant cousin & it is a copy of the original newspaper report.
It names the Catholic priest (Rev J Dunn) who performed the original ceremony & the Cof E vicar (Rev J Dashwood) who performed the 2nd ceremony.
It also gives the names & occupations of the respective fathers, Henry Norman, deceased, Surveyor of HM Excise, late of Tutbury & Thomas Coxon, Pawnbroker of Uttoxeter.

An explanation...

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GENBRIT/2002-03/1015327517

"As many of you will no doubt know, Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act,
which came into force in 1754, laid down that all marriages had to
take place in the Church of England, the only exceptions being Jews
and Quakers. This situation remained until 1837. However, this did
not entirely prevent marriage ceremonies from taking place in
Catholic churches - they simply weren't legal, so that in order to
meet the requirements of the law there had to be an Anglican ceremony
as well. The number of Catholics in England was tiny at this time;
however those that were still true to the old faith did continue to
hold their ceremonies and there were many marriage ceremonies
according to the rites of the Catholic church."

Chris

Edit...There is a long discussion about Catholic marriages before civil registration.

Thanks for that.
Looks like the law changed a year too late for them.
Would still be interested to know which Catholic church they married in as the one in Uttoxeter didn´t open until 3 years after they were married.

Wisechild.....
Looks like it was open1835....

The original registers of the Roman Catholic Church of St Mary for the period 1835-1927 (Bapts), 1876-1910 (Confirmations), 1855-1927 (Mar), & 1873-1925 (Bur) are deposited at Birmingham Diocesan Archive.

Marriage may have been at....

Sacred Heart RC Church which is situated in the village of Abbots Bromley, about 7 miles from Uttoxeter.

Thanks Eringobragh.
Abbots Bromley would make sense because Sarah Coxon´s mother was from there.

My husbands grandparents were married twice in 1913 once in C of E because his grandma was non catholic and then in St Marys Catholic church providing the children were catholic if they had any and as she was 8 months gone it was a forgone conclusion. Hope this helps :-)

Thanks all.
Although I can´t pinpoint the church for the 1st ceremony, some good has come out of it, because I have now found the burials for both of Joseph Norman´s parents, which I had been searching for for over 20 years.
Patience is a virtue. ;-)
