Thank you both for your help. Still no joy with thomas. I suppose if I sent for marriage cert, that would give me where he was born? I guess records have been lost in London , maybe during the war. He died young didn't he, He was 3x great grandfather, and my grandfather was also in his 30's when he died
Incidentally I have not found the marriage, so thanks for that

Thank you Christina I will look into these..How do I look at Parish records? I am puzzled at not finding Thomas, as he could obviously read and write. Does it say what his occupation was? Unfortunately Foster is a common name, and they all seem to keep using the same first names as well! Chigwell could be the right area, so at least that a start

Sophia Mary Hinchliffe married Samuel Dotchin in 1832 at Bethnal Green

In 1861 they are living in Shoreditch with a visitor - Rachael Forster Widow Aged 61 Born in Chigwell, Essex

So that all fits together nicely.

Not having so much luck with Thomas.

Trying to find the birth/death of my ancestor Thomas Foster (was a cordwainwer) what ever that is.
He was the father of Richard Foster born 1828. He was noted as decesed on Richards marriage Cert in 1852 Richard born 1828
I am assuming that he was born about 1800?
I thought maybe try 1841/1851 census? Probably born in london
any help re look up of census please?
