So sad that she was widowed after just a few years of marriage. I do hope that she did have a good life with her family.
Some of our ancestors had such a difficult time, it can make us so grateful now for any blessings that come our way!
Must sign off now and try to get some sleep.

No Kath. I think it is his Naval Records. I know it doesn't help with finding his death but at least it gave an actual date of birth.
My gut felling is that he did indeed die before 1911 and that "qualified" entry for Hetty to the Seaman Orphan school.

Was that document at the National Archives a death record in 1885? It's just that Albert was still alive in the 1891 census.

There is this possibility for Albert's death (with names round the other way):-
Name: GARDINER, William A Registration district: Winchester County: Hampshire Year of registration: 1942 Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar Age at death: 75 Volume no: 2C Page no: 196
The age would be about right.
I know this is after Kate's second marriage but perhaps her first marriage broke up and as divorce was almost impossible to get in those days for ordinary people lots of couples just split up and went on to live with someone else or marry someone else bigamously. It could be a reason why she decided to leave Albert's children in care. Just a thought really.

Strange I can't find Kate and William/Albert on any census. Do you have them together? If the marriage was in 1886 they should be on at least the 1891 and 1901.
