Hi Eringobragh & Flip,
Thank you for answering my question about the number Eringobragh,I will check that out,and Filp she was coming out here to her sister Annie but yes she could have come to escape gossip thats what I would like to know as my second cousin isn't sure if hes a real Lamont, thats Georges son.
I only have the death cert of Elizabeth and I don't remember any one talking about my great gran.
On George's birth cert they had illegitimate on it but then it was crossed out and we don't know why.
This is a puzzle I don't think I'm going to solve.
Thank you for your help I just don't know where to go from here.

I just had a thought would it be easier to go down through John Lamont's brother
thats John Lamont Sr,his brothers name is William to,they keep giving the kids the same names and thats confusing.
Thank you for your help Cheryl.

I assume the soldier I found was from Greenock, enlisted first in the Argyle & Southern Highlanders and then transferred to Machine gun corps. He could be totally unconnected but it was the only war record I could find that could be relevant to the family.

As you know, they had son William c1915, then no other children until George in Nov.1920 in Australia. So could this indicate he was away at war or already dead? She was pregnant when she set sail in 1920 with the other children, so was she escaping the gossip or was she already with someone else?

Have you found her in Aus (apart from her death)?

Hi Choccy, Reggie,Flip, Jude & AlanOnTheWirral.

I have Georges birth certificate and he was born 25.11.1920 here in Australia.
I also have the information on the ship that they came over on,and Flip I have the marriage cert, but I don't have where John Lamont died.
I can not find any thing that lets me know why Elizabeth came to Australia with out her husband.
I'm trying to help George's son find out if he real is a Lamont or another name as my family were very quiet about things and didn't talk much about John Lamont my great grandfather.
He could have gone to jail to I don't know.

AlanOnTheWirral Could you tell me what the 2985 is please is it an army number for the Highlanders.
I want to thank you all for your help I was hoping that some one might have some answers but it seems like he got lost and just can not be found.
Cheryl.

There's nothing to back up that death though, no military record (that I can find) the only thing is his medal card on the nat archives website - I can't find it on ancestry as there are so many.

'Deceased' in 1930 may not be accurate...............that may have been what she was told.

You need to find the marriage to McGuire.................the cert will give you useful info, on which to base your other searches

A tree on Ancestry has George born on the 25th November 1919.

Elizabeth aged 28, Margaret 8, John 7 and William 4, left the UK on the 'Themistocles' on the 2nd July 1920 (after George was born in Australia in 1919)

Something not quite right with the dates?

EDIT - have now found his WW2 Army record which shows his actual date of birth as 25th November 1920

Hi Everyone,
I am looking to find my great grandfather John Lamont born about 1885 - 1888 I have him born in Ireland,at some time came to Scotland & married my great grandmother Elizabeth (Lizzie) McGuire (or MacGuire) she was born 1892 Greenock Scotland,Elizabeth came to Australia in 1920 I have all her information, but she came here with out her husband, she bought three children to Australia with her my grandmother Margaret & her sons John & William & was pregnant with her third son George.
What I am looking for is what happen to the great grandfather and where he died, did he stay in Scotland or did he leave was he in the army which I have tried to look for but there are that many John Lamonts.
I have looked at Scotlands people but once again there are that many & I don't know when he died,my grandmothers marriage certificate had him as deceased in 1930. I hope you can help as he has become a real headache for me and one of his grandsons just needs to know what happen to him.
Thank you Cheryl.
