Yes I think it would fit, and it does look like N/R rather than others on page for S/R (Southern Rhodesia?). And when he came back in 1954 he gave an address of c/o Nyasaland House - I'm pretty sure Nyasaland was part of Northern Rhodesia protectorate.

The other consideration - where we haven't found shipping lists - maybe he travelled via Europe so he is not showing up on UK incoming/outgoing passenger lists. Passenger lists for people travelling from Ireland or mainland Europe do not appear to be online (don't even know if they exist). But I'm no expert in this area.

I double checked the last passenger list that Elizabeth travelled on, and the country of intended furture residence is marked as N.R or that's what it looks like to me, would this be Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia?

Does anyone know anywhere I can find out where missionaries were posted, as the husband of this lady was a missionary, I know she died in Africa but have no idea where so thought knowing where he was posted might help

Flip Report 8 Sep 2013 12:52

No, I can't find him coming back between 1948 and his departure alone in 1951 either. :-S

He must have come back though.

That would be my guess though I haven't found him with or without her coming back after 1948

Ha ha! Off to do the veg now to go with a slow roast whole leg of lamb (for just two of us....piggish but mmmmm :-)

So John.. search narrows to after 27 May 1948 and before 1951 (also need to find Thomas incoming for the 1951 trip back)

I can't find them returning until Thomas returns to Mombassa alone and then comes back with Eileen in 1954

Flip Report 8 Sep 2013 11:22

She may have died in Africa, as I can't see a marriage for Thomas/Eileen in the UK they may have married there as well. The 1954 shows them coming back to UK as a couple, but there is no trace of them going out to Africa together prior to this. Just looks like they came back here for a visit. This looks like Eileen's death:

She was travelling with Thomas Miller Shearer (47, builder) - wonder if this is a mistake? Address c/o Nyasaland House, London.

Same address given when the travelled back 16/7/1954, where he was recorded as Thomas Anderson Sheerer.
