Thank you for your replies. I have already tried roots web and coraweb to no avail. I will try the Scotland people's records. My problem being he came to Australia around 1903 but I can't find any immigration record for him and he and my grandmother did not appear to marry as there is no record of it either. All I have is his death certificate and heresay from other family members.

You might find something amongst the "Minor Records' on the Scotlands People site http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

This is a Pay to view site, but very reasonable £7 for 30 credits. 1 credit gets you a page of possibles, 5 credits to view the record and you can then download the record if available eg births over 100 years ago, marriages 75 years and deaths 50 years

From SP site
"My ancestor was born abroad. Do you have any information on his birth?
You may find your ancestor in the minor records, which comprise information on Scots who were born, married or died outside Scotland. To search the minor records indexes, select the relevant statutory search form then select minor records from the Counties/City/Minor Records drop-down list. The screen will refresh with the available minor records displayed in the District drop-down list. For more detailed information on the births in minor records, look at Statutory births in Record Types & Examples".

can anyone offer suggestions as to how to find birth records dating from around 1870 from Ceylon. My grandfather was born in Colombo to Scottish parents (?) I am wanting to try and trace his family origins

Thanks Narrelle
