5km SW of King's Langley is the village of Sarratt, and just outside of the village the R Chess runs thru Sarratt Bottom. Abt 50 y ago, one could ride along the footpath by the river (well you could ride in practice - I don't know abt the theory) - and see watercress growing in beds in the stream - it was only 18" deep maximum in normal summers. The attraction for a teenager was it was the only place within an easy bike ride with a ford marked on the map. I tried riding my bike across instead of taking a little 18" wide footbridge, but the cobbles in the river bed defeated me, so I had to put my foot down mid-stream, and I gave up, dismounted, and walked my bike thru the rest of the stream - I think it was abt 20' wide. |
