Thank you very much - terrific of you to provide all this - I was aware of these details - it just leaves a death for Joseph to find - between 1891 and 1901!!!
If he WAS a cook, maybe he died on ship, abroad???

This is for Arthur. Next of kin is Mary Barrow, Pieri Lane, Jersey. Arthur was a tailor and had been in Gorey? Industrial School for at least 3 years previous.

I have subsequently found out the following - Joseph's only son that survived out of the three born Arthur went to St Helier School w/e 27 October 1885. The admittance notes state that "Father deserted his wife, 5 years of age (when Arthur was 5 in 1880) - Father is supposed to be a cook aboard a merchant ship"
So, where can I go from here? Will there be a list of merchnt ships with names of employees??

Thanks to all who have posted. Yes, I did get the date wrong there - I was rushing, sorry. The transcriptions of the census (Channel Islands) may be misspelt.... Wife Mary was born in France (1851), although in one of the census, this isn't stated as such.
I think the memorial of J Barrow (Brabant's Horse) is in Cheltenham - why would it be there? He definitely had no connection with Cheltenham.

There is this death, the trouble is there were quite a few J Barrows on the Boer War records, so it may not be him, unless you have his regiment on any of the other records
Boer War 1899-1902 - Soldier details
Name: Barrow, J Rank: Trooper Soldier number: 742 Unit: 2 Brabant's Horse Notes: Age: Literary references:
Memorial: Promenade. Statue. CTV Cheltenham GLOUCESTERSHIRE England
Casualty: Casualty details: Killed on 26 Jun 1900 at Senekal (Official casualty roll location: Senekal) Source: South African Field Force. JB Hayward & Sons Gazetteer: [2826: 2820-2737] a town in the Orange Free State (Senekal district; Free State), 45 km north-east of Marquard. The town and district provided burghers for a commando (Cmdt J.I. Jacobsz). On 25 May 1900, Maj H.S. Dalbiac's 34th (Middlesex) company of the 11th Imperial Yeomanry acting as advance guard moved far ahead of Lt-Gen Sir L. Rundle's 8th infantry division and entered the town which was found to be deserted of armed burghers. It was, however, attacked by a commando during the day and Dalbiac and three others were killed, four wounded and 13 surrendered as seven other troopers escaped. As the rest of the divison arrived that day, the town was formally occupied. Rundle's division left on 31 May to be replaced by Maj-Gen R.A.P. Clements's column following the British reorganization. This column was moved to Winburg* on 21 June leaving a garrison of some 700 mounted men from Rundle's column under Lt-Col H.M. Grenfell. At the end of August, the garrison was withdrawn to Ficksburg*. On 15 September Maj-Gen J.E. Boyes column with Rundle entered Senekal where it was inconclusively attacked by a commando of some 300 burghers under Cmdt F.J.W.J. Hattingh of Vrede and Cmdt C.J. de Villiers of Harrismith. Chief-Cmdt C.R. de Wet concluded his invasion of the Cape Colony at Senekal on 11 March 1901, dispersing the burghers who had formed his commando. On 25 April 1901, the town was surrounded by Lt-Col T.D. Pilcher's column and again temporarily occupied. Welcome to the boards Phillip.
I think it would be helpful if you put the word "Canada" in your title so that someone with access to Canadian records may see it.

Hi - he was born in Bangalore on 2 February 1846
In 1871 Canadian census he is in the London district as a labourer in Ward 3! It says his ethnic origin is Irish which ties in as his mother was born in Cork.
No trace of him anywhere after that - in 1891 census his wife Mary is married - in 1901 she is a widow. A son, Arthur Walter was born in 1895 and Joseph's occupation is Soldier.
A death for a Joseph Barrow was found in India in 1886 but this is NOT the same one.
Phil thank you for any help
