From this link
http://blog.findmypast.co.uk/2012/07/ask-the-expert-nurse-child/ :

A ‘nurse child’ can mean a number of things, from informally adopted or fostered, to temporarily ‘farmed out’ to close kin, or family friends or near neighbours or private individuals who offered a service. . . . .

And here -
http://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com/forum/topic4449.html

A nurse child was usually an illegitimate or unwanted child being brought up by foster parents for a small fee. When a mother could not afford to keep/look after the child herself, as she wasn't able to work whilst the child was in her care.

Hi Janette, to find out accurate information about them you really need their marriage certificate to find information as to who their fathers were. Have you looked on FreeBMD for their marriage? http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
