Hi

I am looking for the birth of William Douglas who was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland in around 1799. I am interested in finding out the names of his parents.

On William's marriage certificate dated 1841, his father is named as William Douglas and the father's occupation was Mariner.

It also says that he was a widower so is anyone able to point me in the right direction for finding out who his first wife was please?

safc, I am assuming that as angelicauk has a marriage cert that the marriage was in England but maybe she means aScottish Parish record but would that in 1841 have included father's name and occupation?

Where did he marry as you would not get a Scottish marriage cert dated 1841 as civil registration began in 1855

William's second marriage was to Susan Gauntlett in Christchurch, Southwark, London on 1 March 1841. His occupation at the time of marriage was Stonemason.

I don't have any information on his first marriage though, sorry :(

In the England census returns, his birthplace is given as Scotland. He is on the 1841 England census living in London with Susan.

My dad also said that there was a family story about one of the Douglas family members moving "south" and therefore lost contact with the rest of the family. Not sure if this relates to William though!

The 1851 is probably a better guide to his YOB:
