Find Ancestors

My mother was born in 1923, no father on her birth certificate and from her birth until 1939 we don't know where or who she was living with. As I child I was told she didn't have parents and now she has died I would like to find more information. Is there any information on fostering/children's homes?
Any help on where to go from here would be great.

Maybe she was in Barnardos

I have thought of Barnados, I will try them. I have found her mother on census but not living with her 3 children.
When my father died I found a brass tag with my mothers name J Ewin 8 st Mary's Grove SW 13 on it. I have tried to find information on that but nothing as yet. Could this be a standard identity tag used in children's homes or institutions?

Susan, there was an orphanage In Randolph Gardens Paddington
It was called the Orphanage of Mercy . They are now known as the sisters of the church. They are based in Wimbledon (church of England) Worth a try
