Hi Alviegal, yes we have all those. Just strange mother for Ellen is Catherine not Mary. I've checked all records and there was another John Binns in the 53rd reg. But he was in 2nd battalion and they didn't go to India from what I've read. It was just the 1st battalion, which is a shame cos that could have been an explanation for that. Thank you for your reply.

Do you think this may be another child for him? Different wife though.
Perhaps there were 2 John Binns in the same regiment.

Do you belong to Ancestry Francesca?

There is a section: Historical Records of the 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment 1755-1889

There is 292 images to search through... and you may not end up with anything.

Hi Francesca, I'm afraid UK arrivals records don't go that far back - they start at 1878.

EDIT: At least the ones on Ancestry do so if anyone knows of another source please advise.

I have an ancestor who served in the shropshire 53rd reg in India in the early 1800s.His name
was John Binns bap.1785 Elland ,Halifax west yorkshire. His wife Mary was also with him and they had 2 children in India,Robert born 1808 and John born Dec. 1812.
I found some army records and he was discharged from the army whilst still in India. His discharge date is 19th october 1811,so it looks like he stayed in India for a while. Their next child was born in 1818 in Halifax so they were back home by then.
Just wondered if anyone had access to passenger lists to see when they came back.Im guessing they probably didnt stay too long after John was born in 1812.
Thankyou

Francesca
