There doesn't appear to be any further Pendleton births with mmn Bentley 1915-1937 in any county

Use this site for bmd's from the start of official registration until approx 1950 - it's an ongoing project, but as it says is free

From that you can see (what should be your) John Pendleton's birth registered in the September quarter of 1917. As the birth was after Sep Qtr 1911 the record will show the mother's maiden name - Bentley in this case. You can now look for a marriage between a Pendleton and Bentley, but unless you know anything for sure you need to buy birth/marriage certificates to confirm you have the right people

There are 2 Joshua Pendleton's in the right sort of area 1911. I think you might need the marriage cert. to sort out which one is yours.

I assume you wish to trace the family backwards in time?
If you check Freenmd, you can see the maiden name for John's mother:

Births Sep 1917 (>99%)
Pendleton John Bentley W. Derby 8b 643

From this it's reasonable to suppose these are his parents - usually it's advisable to get a child's birth cert, but with uncommon names it's sometimes OK not to do so (do be careful when doing this though!):

I am trying to trace my ancestors the Pendleton family from Liverpool. I know John was born on 27/07/1917 in West Derby, Liverpool and married Alma May Matthews in 1944.
