Do you actually have the marriage certificates for James and Patricia? Or just the records? If the former can you post all the info on them...address at time of marriage, where, witnesses, fathers, spouses and spouses fathers.

He did use his middle name on his attestation papers:

There are no family details given but it is definitely him as his signature is a perfect match for that on the marriage record.

When he was demobbed 1919 his regiment was MFP and his home address was originally given as 4 Meadow Road, Southborough, Kent then crossed out and changed to 402 Devon Buildings, Toolly Street, London SE1

U sure when then named change took place but Elizabeth husband died in 1932 so not sure if it happened then.
