Good reminder Potty, about the age thing in the 1841 census. That would make sense. Thank you. Looks hopeful for Rhonda.

Walter Blakie, born 05/03/1860, at 7.45pm, at Alton, Parish of Wilton.
Father: James Blakie, cattle dealer.
Mother: Isabella Blakie, ms Hall.

It doesn't say when/where the parents married, but looks as if the marriage posted by Malcolm will be the correct one.

In the Scottish censuses he's listed as a cattle dealer, and in NZ as a farmer (and the sons, too).

The NZ Electoral Rolls, year 1870-71, lists several entries for James Blaikie in the Ryal Bush area .
Andrew, Peter, and William (?) are also listed as landowners in 1870-71, and Walter in 1887-8.
I assume that just means he owned more than one property in the area - it seems unlikely that there would be several people of that name in one area.

I would suggest looking at one of the 1855 births as 1855 records give slightly more info than later ones.

familysearch has 3 births for children on James and Isabella 1855-1860. Walter and Eliza in October 1855 in Minton and another Walter (presumably the first died) in March 1860 in Wilton. Their births will be on scotlandspeople (the 2nd Walter definitely is).

Transcription of the 1851 gives his birth parish as Wilton; occupation Cattle Dealer.

Ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census, so his age on that would agree with that on the 1851.

Were any of the children born in Scotland after 1855? If so, their birth records should have the date and place of parents' marriage.

Isabella Hall married James Brack at Edrom (berwickshire) on 9th May 1836 (from a search on SP.)

The original document is available on Scotlands People.

Remember that James Brack may be the transcribers interpretation of his name. Take a look at the original. Also be aware that although you seem to have the correct Isabella Halls birth, it's not guaranteed.

Also i'm suspicious that the one on the death cert and the two census seem a bit wide apart for date and may not be the same people. The 1851 census may show his birth parish.

I have looked on familysearch.org and scotspeople but just cannot pinpoint the correct Blaikie. I feel I am just guessing.

I have hit a brick wall and would like some help please. I cannot find the birth and marriage of James Blaike/Blakie. On the 1841 Census, James was listed at age 20 and in the 1851 Census he was 32 but on his Death Certificate (d. 28 November 1887 aged 76) in Ryal Bush, New Zealand. The dates of his birth would then make his year of birth be 1821, 1819 or 1811 respectively.
He married Isabella Hall (born in Edrom Berwickshire in 1819) and had 10 children. The eldest child, Peter was born 1840 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire and their second child Andrew was born in 1842 in Minto, Rox. This would assume that they married in or about 1838/1839.
They immigated to New Zealand on the "Robert Henderson" in 1860.
I have done some extensive searching but now need your help please.
