James Budd, blacksmith married Sarah Johnson in 1838 in Exeter district and by 1841 they are living in Cardiff. I have them in Cardiff in 1851, and FreeBMD gives deaths for James in 1887 and Sarah in 1878, both in Cardiff. They had 2 children, Mary born Cardiff 1845 and Robert Henry born Cardiff 1848. I can't find any of the family after 1851 except for Mary, who married John Thomas Moses in Cardiff in 1866. Any help in tracing them gratefully received. Thanks. |

Could this be them in 1861 (from Ancestry, can't find them on other sites) |

When Mary married in 1866 both she and John Thomas gave their address as 1 Canal Parade. |

Yes that's definitely them - many thanks. Why haven't the other sites got them? Seems so odd. And the fact that the son Robert vanishes altogether, with no death on FreeBMD. Could he have gone abroad I wonder? Or to sea? |

And that's an address I haven't got - Canal Parade. Many thanks. |

I think this is James Budd. The age is 29 on the image, but everything else fits. |

Certainly looks like him, but the age should be 69! How odd! Many thanks. |

Any sign of them in 1871 I wonder? I haven't been able to find them, even allowing for ages being written completely incorrectly! |

Not yet. I think the whole Budd family may have been written incorrectly. Ozi |

Sarah was born Pembury so perhaps they got muddled up or it was just easier not to right it? |

Actually I think Sarah may have been born Payhembury but in 1861 she's down as Pembury, Devon. |

Their places of birth seem to have confused the census enumerators! I suspect Payhembury (which is near Sidmouth) would have been pronounced 'Pembrey' in a Devon accent - there certainly isn't a Pembrey in Devon, despite what the 1861 census would have us believe. And in 1851 they put James Budd's birthplace as Chislehampton, Oxfordshire, which it clearly wasn't - we've found Budd gravestones in Chittlehampton, Devon. The Budds are proving some of the most elusive of my ancestors! Thanks everyone for your help - at least I've got a bit more to go on now. Must try and track Robert Henry born 1848 next - he can't just have vanished without trace! |
