Two Allowances - Woman Sentenced For Fraud

As the wife of an army deserter, who from last July had been serving in the navy, Annie Menagh pleaded guilty before the Liverpool stipendiary, to having obtains £37. 10s, the monies of the Post Master General.

Prisoner had been visited by the police to whom she persisted that the last letter she had read from her husband George Menagh (formally of the Kings Liverpool Regiment) was dated from a camp at which his battalion was stationed.

As a matter of fact, however, she had been receiving a navy allowance as well as the army separation pay of 25s a week.

Mr T S Holmes, director of prosecutions, pointed out that the prisoner must have known of her husbands change of service when she was questioned by police.

Three months in the second division was the punishment.

Tosh Report 6 Aug 2013 01:37

Does anyone have any information about a Wilson George Menagh born in Tyrone about 1850? He later lived in Liverpool and married Alice Finn and had a son George Menagh and a daughter Ann Jane. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
