Find Ancestors

I have been searching for my ggg grandfather John Melling born c 1817 dont know anything about his parents but would love to ,I have hit a dead wall, he Married Catherine ,dont seem to be able to fine any trace of him after 1841 census, i would love to know did he die was he a convict. I think his wife was in lodging in the 1851 census and 1861 census there are also more children John born 1855 and Martha born 1859, Am I barking up the wrong tree, its driving me potty, I am a novice but I am trying hard. That looks like him doesn't it. An Ancestry tree has his wife as Catherine Callow and parents John Melling and Ann Howard.
