Thankyou all for your replies - ill be looking at all the advice over the next few nights.

I haven't been back on this site or forum as I've been working late nights the past week and also I'm trying to catch up with older family members to make notes and check records. (Not to mention looking after the next generation as well)

:-D

I don't use this site for searching but it looks as if you hover your mouse over Search at the top of the screen and then select what you want to search. I selected Search all Records, put in the name, DOB and POB of one of my ancestors and several hits came up.

As Margee said, freebmd is free and most of use that up to about 1950s.

You can only view other trees if you are invited by the owner. First, you need to look for common ancestors by selecting Search Member Trees (also under Search at top of screen). When you find someone of interest, send the owner a message by clicking on their name. Please don't use the standard GR message of Please may I view your tree as a lot of people won't reply to that. You need to give some info about what you think the connection is.

Kathrine, the 'Search' is at top right of page, click on it, you will find the records available listed there, including 'Search trees' in which you can enter for example 'Joe Bloggs 1882' and see who else has him in their trees.

Hot matches as such aren't a great help, as they are not sent often or (sometimes) accurately, so it's better to use search trees to find matches yourself.

A help section can be found here ( it is at the top of the screen between where it says 'Account' and your name') there is a menu giving facts on how to use the various facilities. This is the link

Is there a wiki or a youtube on how to use this site?

I built my family tree on a different site and came over here to see if there were more clues

I cannot work out how to search records, see other peoples trees or anything useful.

I have uploaded my tree and it's all there, but have had no 'hot matches' in the two months I've been on here and cannot find a simple 'how to use the site'.

I just need technical help as I am beyond frustrated and am ready to just dump all of this. I don't want help to use the forum as such.

TIA
