The two older children could have been Louisa's and have taken Thomas name.

Can you post more details of the marriage, as I can't find it on freebmd.

Hello Everyone
I have searched for Thomas McGrath in the 1841/1851/1861/1871 census for two weeks, several hours every day, without success.
The 1881 census Shows
Thomas Mc Grath Head born 1829 Middlesex
Louisa Wife born 1847 "
Henry J Son born 1866 "
John Son born 1871 "
Sarah Dau born 1877 "
Louisa Dau born 1880 "

Thomas and Louisa were married in St Giles,London 1875.I have inferred from this that the two eldest children were born to a previous wife.I have searched for a Thomas McGrath with sons Henry J and John.As Henry J was still alive in 1881 he should have shown up on a 1871 census entry ??
Thomas died in 1888 in St Pancras.
Some Ancestry trees have his birth in Chatham,Kent, son of Timothy McGrath and Mary.

Please can you help.
Regards
Wendy
