Jayne -

Rootgatherer (as you know) started a thread specifically about Thomas Samuel Hodges for you, and there's a lot of information on it, including some that Rootgatherer has repeated here.

This is the link to it:
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/ancestors/thread/1353801

It will save people researching more than once, needlessly, if you (and anyone else thinking of helping) reply only on that thread, and keep all the info together there.

(I realise you were only replying to Charles in the hope that he might be related.
I also realise that you first posted to Charles's thread before Rootgatherer started the other thread for you!)

Thank you Charles
I have only just started to search so no tree started yet I'm afraid. I'm finding it all quite confusing so taking it slowly & trying to digest any relevant information as it arrives. Hopefully I'll get quicker as time goes on :-D

Hi Jayne,
I started this thread sometime ago and the Thomas Samuel Hodges you are looking for is not in my family tree, do you know details of his grand-parents and great grand-parents. I haven't explored all the branches of the Hodge(s) lines in my family tree, but William had 3 children; Edgar b.1869, Mary Ann b.1871 and Ellen b.1874. As far as I am aware Edgar didn't have a son called Thomas, Mary married a George Silver and Ellen I don't know if she married. So Thomas Samuel wouldn't be a direct descendent. As William himself was from Wales, I doubt that there is a connection.

Hello
I'm searching for family trees for Thomas Samuel Hodges born 1904 in Wouldham (near Chatham though it comes under Malling in census)
Any information out there would very much appreciated
Thank you

Hi Jan
The marriage to Elizabeth shows that he was a joiner in 1860, on the 1861 census he is recorded as a joiner. On Alice's birth certificate he was a Wheelwright, after that he is always a Shipwright or Ship's Carpenter. Around this time the dockyard in Pembroke was developing quite rapidly so maybe he started off making wheels but got more productive work in the shipyard and then moved to Chatham shipyard.

Charlie

Elizabeth was 19 on the 1861 census, William according to FindMyPast was 29 but the record isn't clear, I think it may be 24. His second child's mother was Mary Hodges (nee Boise) according to the birth certificate. I believe this is Mary Rebecca Boys from other records. No I haven't been able to find a record of this marriage.
Many thanks
Charlie

I see William was a ship's carpenter 1871. Does this distinctive occupation tie up with the William married to Elizabeth?

How old was Elizabeth in the 1861 census?

Have you found the marriage of William to his wife of the 1871 census, and what is his status if you have the marriage certificate?

Thanks

Charles

Charles Report 29 Jul 2013 18:48

I am researching my GG Grandfather William Hodge b. 05/12/1838 in Angle, Pembroke. On the 1871 census he was living in Chatham Kent with his wife and 3 children. His wife and 2 younger children were born in Chatham but the elder girl Alice was born in Pembroke in 1861. I suspect as there were 8 years between Alice and the next child that his daughter was probably from a previous marriage in Pembroke. I have found that a William and Elizabeth Hodge (nee Price) had a daughter Alice Lavinia born in 1861 in Pembroke (the only Alice Hodge(s) born in this area around this time). What is strange is that I can't find any record of them on subsequent censuses nor can I find any record of the deaths of Elizabeth or Alice. I am wondering if this may be the same Alice that appears in Chatham with her father, but without finding out what happened to Elizabeth I can't be sure. (There was an Elizabeth Hodge who died in Pembroke in 1861 aged 93 and an Elizabeth Ann Hodges in 1865 aged 6 weeks).
Does anyone have any thoughts that may help to solve the puzzle?
Many thanks Charlie.
