Alicia Beatty Ireland 1830's

Alexander Report 22 Jun 2015 15:36

William Beatty, Farmer, of Aghadrumkeen, Ematris Parish, County Monaghan, Ireland married Alicia Jeffers (also of Aghadrumkeen) on 30 March 1829 at the Ematris Church of Ireland Parish Church, County Monaghan. No parents or witnesses were listed on the transcription I viewed. I think that your Alicia Beatty was very likely a daughter of this couple.

I am descended from a William Beatty of Cordressigo, Ematris Parish, County Monaghan and his wife Jane, nee Jeffers by their son William who emigrated to Australia in 1840.

Beatty is a surname of Scottish and Irish origin. In the Scottish case, some have thought that it is derived from the name Bartholomew, which was often shortened to Bate or Baty. Male descendants were then often called Beatty, or similar derivations like Beattie or Beatey. The name Beatty or Beattie, others think, arose in Ireland from Betagh, a surname meaning hospitaller. A majority of people named Beatty or Beattie in Ireland are the descendants of Scots who came over to Ulster in the seventeenth century. Beattie is common in counties Antrim and Down, whilst Beatty is more common in counties Armagh and Tyrone. In Fermanagh in 1962, Beatty was the fifteenth most common name and was recorded as synonymous with the names Betty and MacCaffrey (or McCaffrey).

Her father was a contractor! I thought it said conductor... I guess as a contractor he was more likely to be an itinerant worker which doesn’t help… Beatty doesn’t strike me as a typically Irish name though, unless anyone knows better. I don’t recognise the witness names, but will try a search on the census to see if I can find anything. If only I knew the mother’s name! Will try again this weekend when not at work.

Thank you all

I am guessing the witnesses to the marriage offer no clues?

Thank you all : - I have info on her for the 1851 & 1861 census, and her marriage at what seems a very young age to Bennett. Her father William was a railway conductor according to her marriage cert, but it's the Irish connection I'm stuck on.

I don't know if any of them were actually Irish (and if so Protestant or Catholic) or she just happened to be born there - and/or whether the whole family came over to Lancs or just her. I've tried looking at 1841 census here for her and William (and hopefully mum too) but can't see anything, and all my subscriptions have now run out!

I've looked briefly at rootsireland homing in on Co. Monaghan hoping her name would be unusual enough to trigger a find, but there's nothing before 1850's when I know she was over here.

I was hoping someone might have some nugget that I'd overlooked that would propel me forward!

thank you

The English census shows an ancestor - Alicia Beatty - was the daughter of William, and born around1832 in what appears to be Rockkorry, Co. Monaghan. By 1848 she was married to Bennett Knight in Deane, Lancashire. However I can't find any early information about her or her side of the family.

Can anyone help?

Thank you
