James Clennet Robson 1886 Sunderland

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Unknown Report 28 Jul 2013 15:19

My grandfather David Robson had an uncle of this name who departed for Adelaide S Australia in 1926 with his wife Olivia nee Fenwick and family Frank 1911 S Shields, Constance Fenwick 1915 Morpeth, Phyllis 1919 Easington and Gertrude 1921 Easington. James died suddenly in 1932 and was buried in St Marys Cemetery Adelaide. So were Olivia in 1963 and Gertrude in 1998.

Does anyone know of this family either in England or Australia or what became of the other 3 children?

My grandfather also had a younger brother (1906 Merton Surrey) of the same name as well as his grandfather (1852 Newcastle upon Tyne, a joiner living in Ferryhill Durham before his death). David and his brother lived in Dover Kent for some years. Their parents were John Robson 1876 NUT(a joiner setting up a company John Robson (Dover )Ltd) and Isabella Millar 1876 Maryport Cumbria. John's brother Thomas Ernest also left Ferryhill for Dover working as a miner.

Anybody out there have any information re these people?

Hi Marion

As Gins said..........exactly what information are you looking for?

Unknown

Unknown Report 28 Jul 2013 16:43

Thank you all for the information, some of which I've dug up but bits I hadn't.

Can anyone elucidate on James Clennet Robson 'Blacksmith's striker' on Pricklyholly's reply?

I was wondering why James went to Australia, whether he was a plumber out there and whether his children had any descendants. Gertrude seems to have died a spinster. I did find one newspaper article relating to his death
.
I also wondered if anyone knows anything about the family in England in Dover (I have picked up bits of information from the Dover Express newspaper) or the north. Ferryhill, Rothbury, Westoe & Monkwearmouth Shore are some of the places I know the family of James Clennet 1852 lived in. My mother is the only living descendent of the family that I know and she knows so very little about the family.

Thanks Marion

Hi, Marion -
I'm not sure if you were asking about John Clennet Robson, or Blacksmith's striker as well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacksmith

"A blacksmith's striker is an assistant (frequently an apprentice), whose job it is to swing a large sledgehammer in heavy forging operations, as directed by the blacksmith. In practice, the blacksmith will hold the hot iron at the anvil (with tongs) in one hand, and indicate where the iron is to be struck by tapping it with a small hammer held in the other hand: the striker then delivers a heavy blow with the sledgehammer where indicated. During the 20th century and into the 21st century, this role has been increasingly obviated and automated through the use of trip hammers or reciprocating power hammers.about his occupation.

Once again thank you all for your replies especially to Potty about the probate for James Clennet 1852 - that would be the will of my great great grandfather who died in Ferryhill which I didn't know about. Did that information come off this site?

Also thanks to ArgyllGran for the explanation about Blacksmith strikers.

The probate record came from Ancestry; the death record from Ancestry but should be on this site too.
