Blackburn Standard 17/03/1852

Fatal accident from machinery. An inquest was held on Saturday at the New Inn Higher Booths before J Hargreaves Esq coroner on view of the body of James Trickett aged 17 who fell over some wheels in Hargreaves Mill, and whose body was drawn between the cogs of the machinery, and so dreadfully crushed as to cause instant death. The owner promised that the wheels would be boxed off and two of the jury to be engaged to inspect the work when done.

Verdict, accidental death by machinery.

Edit.. I wonder if there was a connection between the coroner named Hargreaves and the mill also called Hargreaves Mill

Hi Mark

Manchester Times Saturday March 13, 1852

Dreadful Death By Machinery---On Wednesday last, James Trickett aged 17yrs, employed at the cotton-mill of Mr Thomas Duckworth, Higherbooth, Rossendale was killed. The deceased was stooping over some wheels which were close to the floor, when his spoon caught and he was pulled into the machinery. Before he could be extricated his left leg and arm were torn form his body, and the body much bruised: he was quite dead.. An inquest will be held on the body this day (Saturday), at the New Inn, Higherbooth.

Thank you all for your assistance. Unable to prove this is actually my relation.

I suspect this would be his death certificate.
The informant and possibly the home address would be a clue to whether he belonged to your family.

I will apply for that certificate - but if it was accidental death i fear the informant will not be family and the address will be where he died not his home address.

Thanks

I have also checked the article in the Manchester Guardian but there is no more info that has been mentioned above.

Judging by the info in the Newspapers - this would be the James Trickett involed ???:

EDIT - I think I have discounted this James as I believe I have found the following marriage for him?? :

Marriage: 1 Aug 1857 St Mary and All Saints, Goodshaw, Lancashire, England
James Trickett - 24, Labourer at Print Works, Bachelor, Goodshawfold
Ellen Riley - 24, Power Loom Weaver, Spinster, Goodshaw
Groom's Father: Henry Trickett, Bleacher
Bride's Father: Richard Riley, Collier
Witness: Samuel Smith; Ellen Smith
Married by Banns by: John Howard
Register: Marriages 1838 - 1875, Page 85, Entry 169

So, It looks like it is more probably the one Mike* has posted above (son of James and Margaret) !

Although he died in Higher Booths he may not have been born there.

The informant on the death cert I would imagine to be a relative and their address would be recorded
