I have got William Burton bp 29 Oct 1789 Winthorpe, Notts, died 12 Nov 1864 Coddington and his wife Lucy born c1789 North Hykeham, Lincs, died 19 July 1862 Coddington. Their death dates come from their gravestone in Coddington. |

Actually just thought - Sarah Hurlain/Herlain could be William's grandmother! |

Brilliant - that could be them. Looking again at the 1851 census, Lucy's birthplace could be Thorpe on the Hill - definitely looks like Hill as the last bit. Wonder why 1861 said North Hykeham??? And could Eslam have been misheard as Herlain? Thanks very much for this. :-) |

Ah, if William was born in Bardney it's not my William - censuses definitely say Winthorpe, Notts as his birthplace, which is only a few miles from Coddington. Unless he was working in Bardney. I've been caught like this before - place of residence at marriage is not necessarily the birthplace. More to ponder! |

Sarah Haslem age as 100 on original 1841 census is clear |

Yes it's definitely 100! And I can see now how it might be Haslem, not Herlain - wish their writing was a bit clearer! Thanks everyone - looks like this must definitely be the right William Burton as it all fits now. Another name filled in on the tree! :-) |

Oh that sounds likely doesn't it. Many thanks. And one in the eye for all the people who parrot 'they all died young in those days'! No they blooming well didn't - not if our trees are anything to go by! :-D |

FreeBMD has her death as Sarah Heslen, June 1843 Newark. I'm beginning to think this surname takes the record for the number of variants! |
