Details
Born on Nov 24th, 1841, the son of Thomas Puzey, head cashier of the Bank of England, a familiar name appearing on the banknotes of the period, and of Elizabeth Anne his wife. He entered Merchant Taylors' School in September, 1853, and left in the following year. He then studied at Guy's Hospital, where he was House Surgeon and Obstetric Resident. In 1865 he was appointed House Surgeon to the Liverpool Royal Infirmary, and five years later Surgeon to the Infirmary. In 1875 he became Surgeon to the Liverpool Northern Hospital. For a long period he was Assistant Surgeon to the Liverpool Eye and Ear Infirmary, Consulting Surgeon, Medical Attendant and Referee to the Liverpool District of the London and North-Western Railway. He early adopted Listerian methods - in particular the catgut ligature, rendered aseptic after Lister's method, which superseded the teaching he had received at Guy's, that the ligature might be dispensed with by applying torsion to the arteries. He was by no means a bold surgeon or a brilliant operator, but was known as deliberate and punctilious in considering the reasons for an operation, however trivial.

On reaching the retiring age at the Liverpool Northern Hospital, he was made a member of the Hospital Committee as well as Consulting Surgeon.

He had practised at 71 Rodney Street, Liverpool, and lived in retirement for a short time at Princes Avenue, West Kirby, until his death on Oct 10th, 1916; he was buried at West Kirby.

Publications:-
Between 1880 and 1895 Puzey's publications related to the application of Listerian surgery and the use of catgut as material for ligatures.
"Recollections of the Earlier Period of the Listerian Method." - Liverpool Med-Chir Jour, 1896, xvi, 1.
"A Surgical Revival [the aseptic animal ligature]." - Ibid, 1895, xv, 1.

The will was prooved by John Chaucy Jones, and Chauncy Puzey of 71 Rodney street Liverpool, so it may be worth someone looking up the address in 1871 to see who was living there.

I know this isn't 1871 census:-

UK, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960 about Doctor Puzey
Name: Doctor Puzey
Port of Departure: Bombay, India
Arrival Date: Oct 1899
Port of Arrival: London, England
Ship Name: Peninsular
Search Ship Database: View the 'Peninsular' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Official Number: 93205

................but, if this is him coming back from India in 1899, then maybe that is where he was in 1871?
Could be that he went to India as part of his studies, or maybe he was a doctor in the army over there?

greyghost Report 6 Jul 2013 15:12

Doesn't appear to be at No. 71 or any other No. Rodney Street in 1871

Don't think he was in the Army - his biography has him in Liverpool from 1865 until his death.

I think he was on a trip somewhere, he shouldn't have been short of a bob or two!

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 6 Jul 2013 16:17

The Liverpool Mercury in 1869 published occasional reports of how many people had been treated at the Royal Liverpool Infirmary. Chauncy Puzey is mentioned as being a junior house surgeon in those reports.

EDIT: Just a random thought - if he was on duty on census night 1871, might he have been missed?
