Re. Robert Rossel died Jan-March 1860 in Prescot. Volume 8b page 402. Can anyone please help. I've found what I believe to be a relevant death but need his age to confirm that I have the right person.

The only way to find out how old he was is to purchase the cert................UNLESS the death is on LancsBMD............try looking there.

Age at death was not added to the GRO index until c1867

I believe at that time the ages arent part of the GRO indexing , the age will be on the cert.

Have you narrowed down when he may have died ie found him on the earlier census but not 1861 census.

Was he married if so have you found his widow on the 1861 ,

Its a bit of narrowing down for possibles I,m afraid and then taking a chance getting the death cert

Have you checked 1861 census?

What can you tell us about him to help with the search?

Would this be him from 1851 census?

The only way to find his actual age is to buy the death certificate as age at death was not added to the index until much later than that.

However I have looked on Findmypast deaths and the 1860 death is the only one for that name although there are other names that could be mistranscribed.

Thank you both for the information. I had wondered why the age of death was on many I've searched and hadn't realised that only happened from 1867. Not on Lancs BMD, so I guess I'll just send for the death certificate. Thanks again, all's clear now.

Yes, Andrew that's him, and he doesn't appear on the 1861 census Reggie, which is why I strongly suspect that it's him. Thank you all.

In the case of Prescot, some of the old Prescot RD (e.g., around Widnes) are now in the modern Cheshire, so you should also have checked at:
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/
(He does not seem to be there.)

Thank you for that mgnv. Even if, as you say, he isn't there, that's a very useful piece of information for me, as many of my ancestors were in that area and I wouldn't have considered looking at Cheshire BMD.

Lyho47 - The other place you might find an age at death is in a burial rego, see:
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/ (click on the parishes link).
This site covers parishes in historic Lancs.

The relevant local BMD sites are governed by the modern county that now holds the regos (Liverpool & Manchester are in with Lancs here).
However, bits of historic Lancs like Widnes, Warrington are now in with Cheshire, and Lancs-in-Furness is now in with Cumbria.
For a more complete listing of online indexes, see:
