PricklyHolly

PricklyHolly Report 27 Jun 2013 21:20

Can i just ask how you know for certain that it is your William Swift who remarried an Eliza Sheridan??

KathleenBell Report 27 Jun 2013 21:24

You definitely need the second marriage certificate even if you are sure it is "your" man as it will give you Eliza's marital status. If you can't find any information about her it may be that it is also her second marriage so the certificate would give you her maiden name.

I know this thread's really abt Eliza, but I wanted to make sure Anne's aware of some useful resources, so here's a bit abt Wm.

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/
Baptism: 19 Feb 1854 St Thomas, Ashton in Makerfield, Lancashire, England
William Swift - 9 Child 5 Son of John Swift & Elizabeth
Born: 30 Dec 1853
Abode: School Lane in Ashton
Occupation: Spinner
Baptised by: Edward Pigot Vicar
Register: Baptisms 1844 - 1861, Page 206, Entry 1643
Source: LDS Film 1885658

http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1853
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
SWIFT William Ashton Wigan & Leigh RAMPLING ASHT/8/121

There are 6 Swift-Rampling births rego'ed in Ashton before Wm, and one after, so there are 2 girls unregistered, probably pre-1837q3.

The matching GRO entry is:
Births Mar 1854 (>99%)
Swift William Wigan 8c 91

This illustrates that LancsBMD indexes by date of birth, and the GRO indexes by date of registration. These can differ by 6 weeks without any hassle for the parents, and decades with hassle.

Warrington is now in Cheshire, and most of their BMD regos are still held by Warrington, so they're under:
