Searching for Richard Frederick Haskey Wragg

I have an interesting one....

I have a relative born Q4 1901.

From the 1911 census I believed he has called Frederick Wragg however I now know (from his birth record) that he was born Richard Frederick H(askey) Wragg.

The Richard and Haskey parts are the names of his father (Richard Edwin Haskey born c1862) however he was illegitimate and I believe this is why he was christened with his mother's surname. Many of his siblings were also born illegitimately and with Haskey as one of their middle names (Their mother, Gertrude later married Richard Edwin in 1919).

From discussions with relatives we believe that Frederick (probably his normally used names to differentiate him from his dad and some other brothers who were also registered as Richard) was gassed but survived WW1 and later went on to buy?? St. Nicholas' Foundry in Ipswich. I cannot find anything to corroborate these stories and I would be grateful if anyone can find any weddings, death or military records to help substantiate these rumors.

Happy hunting :-)

Hello DM, where was he born?

ADDED:

He appears to have been registered with his father's surname:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
Name: Richard Frederick H Wragg
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1901
Registration District: Ipswich
Inferred County: Suffolk
Volume: 4a
Page: 1038

EDIT: Ignore above re father's name.

Can you give details of the christening you refer to.

MarieCeleste, I think Haskey was his father's name?

DM, have you found a death for him - might be interesting to see where he was living at the time and who registered it. Maybe you could investigate whether he left a will too.

Hi,

Sorry I said Christened in my first post but I meant registered. Thanks to everyone for looking.

I have his Birth index and I'm familiar with the 1911 census.

That's all I have. I've been looking for death, marriage, other census', trade registers and military records all to no avail.

Thanks again,

The children may have taken their fathers name after the parents married

These are possibly two deaths for the brothers

NAME: Edwin Richard Haskey
BIRTH: 25 May 1904
DEATH: Jul 1986 - Ipswich, Suffolk, England

Victor R Haskey
BIRTH: abt 1905
DEATH: Jun 1932 - Ipswich, Suffolk, England

I've had a look on immigration lists under Wragg and Haskey, nothing.

Had a look in the newspaper archives as buying a foundry might have been mentioned, nothing.

As regards WW1 records over 60% were destroyed in WW2 so possibly his may have been one of them.

Only thing I can suggest is establishing his actual date of birth (buy birth certificate) and see if we can find a death based on that (hoping it was after the 1960s) to work back from.

I can't find anything else either MarieCeleste (despite cleaning the specs several times!! :-D)
Tried various combinations of his name but to no avail.
I wonder where he went?

Is there a list of what WW1 records were destroyed in WW2?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 27 Jun 2013 22:08

Not that I know of DM, possibly any list of records was destroyed with the records themselves.
