Given that Kathleen gave Kent as home address this is possible:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915

Name: Kathleen E Nye
Mother's Maiden Name: Maynard
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1914
Registration District: Sevenoaks
Inferred County: Kent

As the 1937 birth is registered in both surnames COLE and MYE//NYE it seems the parent wasnt married at the time but may have intended to.?

a marriage in 1939,

Kathleen E,,,,,, NYE------Croydon.?

I was wondering if when the father registered the birth he gave the mother's surname as Cole to conceal illegitimacy.

It's possible, if the parents weren't on good terms after the birth, that the mother didn't know the birth had been registered and then did so herself in her own name.

Jacqueline, what is in the father's details on the certificate that Kathleen Evelyn registered?

This is the index on FreeBMD:

Births Mar 1937
Cole Tony Mye Croydon 2a 895
Cole Tony Cole Croydon 2a 879

Mother's maiden name given as Cole.

Is that a transcription error, or did Charles make a mistake when he registered Tony?

I'm wondering if her name had been mis-spelled.

Not seeing a Kathleen Eveleyn Mye but there are quite a few births of a suitable age for girls named Kathleen E May.

Hello Jacqueline, welcome to the boards.

I presume the birth date and birthplace are the same on both certificates?

On the cert registered by Charles Stephen Cole, does it give any details for the mother?

Did your father stay with either of his biological parents?
