OldYorkshireBloke Report 23 Jun 2013 13:24

I have John Shepherd born 1795 Byfleet Surrey on the 1851 census with his wife Jane born c1786 Sunbury Middlesex and daughter Mary born c1825 Laleham Surrey. On the 1851 census they are resident Broad Lane Walton on Thames Surrey.
I also have death/burial records in Chertsey District/ Walton on Thames for a John Shepherd in 1853 age 56 and a Jane Shepherd in 1859 age 76

Despite several attempts I have been unable to find a marriage record or locate them on the 1841 census and wondered if anyone would be kind enough to have a look with a fresh pair of eyes
Many Thanks

Sorry, OYB, not seeing them. I wonder if they are off on Ag LAb travels somewhere.

Have tried to do an address search but there does not appear to be a Broad Lane in the area 1841 and FMP doesn't like Walton on Thames at all!

I've looked on ancestry as well, and am coming up with zilch as well.

You say you can't find a marriage for them - would it be a possibility that they were recently married and John was a widow and had a different wife in 1841?

Thanks for looking - I'm having the same problems.
On Google maps there is a Broad Close near Hersham Station Walton on Thames, I also found reference to a Rural Sanitary Authority agreement with farmer to deposit refuse and night soil on land at Broad Lane, Hersham, Walton on Thames, 1889 - so I think this is the location

Have you looked at the image - I know Jane is transcribed as 65, but I would doubt the transcription - it looks more like 45 to me or could even be 25 but I doubt it.

Thanks Mel
these refs look interesting particularly the Baptism
I think I have also solved the 1841 census problem - just found these two references relating to 1841 census Walton on Thames -

SURREY HISTORY SOCIETY
There are no major gaps in the surviving Surrey censuses. Three parishes are missing from the 1841 census, however: Malden, Walton on Thames and Weybridge. Although no whole parishes are missing

So if they were there in 1841 I am not going to find any records

That marriage looks pretty good Mel. Both of the parish of Sunbury.

Thanks Alviegal

The second possible death for a John Shepherd in 1859 looks very interesting and is closer on age to his birth in 1795

O how about this then.

The writing is very hard to read but I think it may be Sarah Jane Clark.
