Darren,

In those days Latin was used for parish records - Boetius was probably the priest's version of Boaz.

Darren

Darren Report 20 Jun 2013 15:36

Thanks for that Potty. All of the records you guys have suggested, I have followed up on and, they all appear to feature the name Boaz. But the confirmation of Boaz Goodchild's death (i.e: the will mentioned above) is the parish record that I found, which confirms the date and place but clearly lists his name as Boetius. I am wondering how Boetius became Boaz? Late 17th Century...variation on spelling? His daughter, Faith Goodchild, went on to marry and have a son, which she also named Boaz. He, then, married and named his first born Boaz. It fascinates me. :-)

Not sure about your Danish origins Darren, Boaz is from the Old Testament - he was the husband of Ruth

Darren Report 19 Jun 2013 17:28

Thanks Guys!! So it looks like I come from Danish stock? :-D

Got it Darren - I think that what safc has posted is the one !

Could have done with a larger section of the image to compare the letters with others on the page but it is definitely boe(t?) iu(?)

So boetius certainly looks good !

the 'e' which looks like an 'r' is the same as the 'e' in wife just preceding the name

Rambling Report 19 Jun 2013 17:21

name derived from?

"Boetius (or Boethius) of Dacia (latinization for "Bo of Denmark" (as Dacia was often used as the Latin term for Denmark)) was a 13th century Danish philosopher"

I was about to suggest it looks like Bortius - maybe Boetius is the latin version of Boaz?

Do you have this? Nothing more in the record than given below:

UK, Extracted Probate Records
about Goodchild, Booz
Text:
1678 Goodchild, Booz, Osbaston Adm. 73

Book:
Calendar of Wills Proved and of Administrations Granted in the Commissary Court of the Peculiar and Exempt Jurisdiction of Groby, 1580-1800. (Will)

Collection:
Leicestershire & Rutland: - Index To The Wills and Administrations Proved and Granted in The Archdeaconry Court of Leicester 1660-1750, and in The Peculiars of St. Margaret, Leicester, and Rotblen and The Rutland Peculiars of Caldecott, Retton and Tirover

Edit: Their is another record, same details as above, but the name is Boaz.
