So, the will is not a lot of help then :-(

Sorry, but I can't find anything under his birth name - a couple of deaths, which can be eliminated due to other Walter's in the area. Not seeing anything on passenger lists either.

Kerry Report 9 Jun 2013 08:03

Flip, he signed it in March 1928, only a couple of weeks before he died.

Hi Vera, thanks for telling me about your gf - I agree it's ossible. How on earth did you ever find him as Smith?

Flip Report 9 Jun 2013 07:53

I assume you have a copy of the will, what date did Henry sign it? Was about to suggest Aus because Sarah was there, but you've already tried that.

Hi Kerry, Did you notice my reply regarding my grandfather. I know it doesn't help finding him, but that could have happened.

I've also looked for Walter in Wales (some of Henry's brothers went there & there are Walter Waggetts there but not the right one. Have also looked in Australian records for him, as Sarah and her family came out in 1912, but not here either.

Yes they're all there in 1891 and earlier, then Alice & Sarah both married in 1900 and after 1902 no more Walter!

yes, same person - same mother as on birth certificate and same address as in Henry's will, where Jessie is described as the daughter of Eliza Saville of the Newton Heath address.

My grandfather had the same trouble when he enlisted around the time Walter did, he was discharged after a few months. He re-enlisted at the start of the WW1 under the name .....Smith !!!!
So possible he might have re-enlisted ( under another name) earlier, and that is why we can't find him on the 1911. Just a thought.

The child's birth was registered in Failsworth ............ but unfortunately Lancashire bmds do not show the mother's maiden name. They often do, well before mmn shows on freebmd

Have you applied for the birth certificate of the illegitimate child?

Kerry

Kerry Report 9 Jun 2013 06:52

Hi all, Walter Waggett born 1882 in Prestwich Lancs was the son of Henry Tuck Waggett & Sarah Ann Waggett nee Shinn. Last census I can find Walter in is in 1901, as Walter Waggatt, living with Henry. I have army discharge papers showing Walter discharged after 3 mths in army in 1902, not suitable as soldier (failed basic training may be?) then he disappears. Henry is living alone by 1911 census. There is an illegitimate child born in 1904 at Henry's address & when Henry dies in 1928 he leaves 1/3 estate to this child, 1/3 each to his 2 daughters, no mention of Walter. It's possible/likely that this child, Jessie Saville, was either the child of Walter or of Henry himself. Walter may have been dead by 1928 or else cut off from family. There are a couple of Walter Waggett deaths in early 1900s, in Durham and in Hendon, but both of them appear in earlier census records at tha address so probably not my Walter. Any suggestions gratefully received. Kerry
