I am trying to help a friend. My subscription to GR does not cover this
He has Ronald Allen b 1925 Newport 1925 11a 397
His father was James Horace Allen and mother Florence Allcocck
Family say he died on the Russian Convoys in 1942
What is required is proof

History

HMS Lapwing (Cdr.(retired) Edward Campbell Hulton, RN,) was torpedoed and sunk off Northern Russia north of Murmansk in position 69º26'N, 33º44'E.
61 survivors, 158 men died.

In the afternoon on 20 March 1945, U-968 attacked the convoy JW-65 and reported a destroyer and a Liberty sunk and another Liberty ship torpedoed. In fact, the sloop HMS Lapwing of the 7th Escort Group and the Liberty ship Thomas Donaldson were sunk. HMS Lapwing was hit amidships at 13:25 and sank 20 minutes later.


Hit by U-boat
Sunk on 20 Mar 1945 by U-968 (Westphalen).

The problem is that the vessel isn't the Lapwing!

James Horace Allen b 19 Sept 1894 Caldicot Monmouthshire Married Florence Allcock . According to family served in WW1 as a Runner. That is all the information he has. What is required is any details of his Army service

IF......the records survived ( only 30% of WW1 records did so) they will be on Ancestry

It isn't always possible to have what one wants, unfortunately

As you probably know, a large percentage of WW1 records were destroyed bombing during WW2.

Its difficult to tell which if either of the following are 'your' James - probably not the 2nd
