Looking for information on Robert and Jane of County Cavan Ireland. Lived there approx 1812 and married there. I have details of their son's Charles and John being born at Arvagh or Bruce Hall, Cavan. Charles and John came to Australia 1837 and 1854. I have info on the son's but nothing on Robert and Jane who may have originally came from Scotland to Ireland. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Alana

Do you have any dates of birth for Charles and John...?

Sue in WA :-)

Alana Report 1 Jun 2013 07:14

Yes Susan, Charles born 1813 and John, my gr gr grandfather born 1828, married Phoebe Elliott 1854 and they came to Australia on the Stanboul as settlers on 31/10/1854. I do believe they had other siblings.

Came across this, but the dates don't quite tie up with what you state:

New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896

Name: John Lang
Birth Year: abt 1818
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Arrival Date: 21 Feb 1842
Vessel Name: Nabob
Origin Location: Cavan, County Cavan, Ireland

He was single, a farm labourer, could read and write. Religion was Episcopalian.

Bodily health, strength and potential usefulness was rated as good.

Parents were Robt and Jane.

Brought out by AB Smith & Co (think that would be a shipping agent)

EDIT:
Might be a complete coincidence but what would be the odds of 2 John Langs from Cavan, with parents Robert and Jane, going to Australia?

Thanks Marie, that looks interesting. He could have come out earlier, returned home to get a wife and back again in 1854. Thanks for the info. will look back on his death cert to see if it has anymore info.

Looks like the above was indeed a coincidence.

New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896

Name: Phabe Lang (name is Phoebe on image)
Birth Year: abt 1822
Age: 32
Arrival Date: 3 Nov 1854
Vessel Name: Stamboul
Origin Location: Mull, Argyleshire, Scotland

Phoebe was from Branthill, Cavan. Her father William Elliott was dead but mother Eliza still living Branthill. Phoebe could read but not write.

John travelling with her was 26 and a farm labourer. He was from Castle Folds, Cavan where his parents Robert and Jane still lived. He could read and write. His relation in Australia was brother Charles at Campbells River, Bathurst.

John and Phoebe were both religion CoE. £8 deposit per Charles Lang.

Hi Alana - our posts have crossed! I thought that too about him going back to Ireland and then returning to Australia but then I looked at the ages - a 10 year difference.

If John arriving 1854 was 36 and not 26 then it would tie up.

Thanks Marie, I did have the info on arrival, but not Phoebe parents names and where in Cavan John came from. This is a big help.
Charles had a few problems in Ireland because of his strong beliefs according to a book written about his family in TARALGA NSW.

Well I guess we have all slept since then..!

As I stated above there were no other Langs listed for the townland of Arva 1841 ...but going back a ways the Elliotts were shown as being there 1832...so possibly it was the area where Phoebe'family came from

Elliott Archd Arva Town Killashandra Cavan 1832
Elliott Robert Arva Town Killashandra Cavan 1832

Hello again Alana.

I'll send you that travel document by personal message.

Just in case it helps for future reference, if you use the "My Threads" link over on the left it takes you to all threads you've started or posted on. You can then just add a request for further info to an existing thread about the same people and it will move to the front of the boards where people will see it and hopefully provide further assistance. That way all the info is in one place and in context, and also stays within the community board guidelines.

Alana...Have just looked again at the post by MarieCeleste (09.08) the place name Castle Folds for John's parents is no doubt "Castlepoles" and Branthill may well be Bruce/Bruse Hill.....

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 1 Jun 2013 13:41

Eringobragh - you may well be right with those place names - the writing on the documents was hard to make out.

I still have a feeling that the 1837 and 1854 arrivals are the same chap and the age is wrong on the 1854 arrival. I'm not very good on religions - could Episcopalian and Church of England be the same thing?

Alana, do you have an age for John from his marriage certificate, also when/where he died and how old then? Just hoping if we fix correct birth details then it might pinpoint his parents better.

Alana Report 1 Jun 2013 14:44

Hi Marie and Eringobragh, have just found the marriage cert for John and Phoebe, both suppose to be age 24 when married in 1853. and residence CASTLEPOLE and BRANKHILL as best as I can make out from the hand written words.
John died in BLAYNEY NSW. Age 80, buried in the Presbyterian section.

I know from Phoebes death cert in Sydney also in 1908, her age was 86. There was some family talk that she was older than John, just never admitted to it. In that case she would have been born in 1822.
On her cert is says her mothers last name Jackson, no first name.

Episcopalian Church part of the wider Anglican Community..... Scottish in Origin and goes back probably to pre 1600s times.....very distinct form COS and the Kirk....Origins in the (had to run burning the bread!!!) Orthodox Catholic Faith...I think that may be right...
