Help to find stillborn baby

Thank you NanaSue.

I plan on contacting the GRO and I think, if we can't find a burial site, then just having some form of acknowledgement of the baby will mean a lot to my family.

Thank you for the advice and for clarifying how to get hold of these records from GRO.

I now have a few options so hopefully one of them will work out :)

Best wishes,

Rachael

Rachael you may not be able to find a burial site but the General Register Office may be able to send the mother a document which acknowledges the birth, if you know the date of delivery and the hospital.

The GRO hold seperate confidential records for this. You have to phone and ask for a form - it can't be done online. The cost is the same as a birth cert.

If they have no record from the hospital they will return your money

Been down the same road with my mum's cus just before she died - after over 60 years of heartache seeing the facts in a document gave her some kind of closure.

Hi Gins,

Thanks for the tip. I will email her at the weekend to see if she can shed any light on this.

If I have any success I'll be sure to post and let people know :)

Best wishes,

Rachael

Try contacting Elaine at the Sheffield Indexers, she has a 'host' of knowledge about the area you are searching

Good luck :-)

Hi Jan,

This website looks promising so thank you very much :) I'm going to submit a search request to them and see how it goes.

I noticed it's a charity so will make a contribution for the service.

Thank you for the help :)

Hi again Gins,

I've just had a look at the Sheffield Indexers but it looks like records I've already looked at or they're not the correct dates :( Thank you though for the link, I'm sure it will come in handy again as all my family are from up north :)

Have you seen this? I don't think it's been mentioned, apologies if it has:

Gins,

No I haven't so another new route to try :)

Would I have to search again for Parish records of a burial? Or would you recommend another way - e.g. contact them directly?

I agree it's never an easy topic.

My nan is 82 now and she still finds it hard to talk about it but I think she wants closure, hence this ongoing search to try and find him.

After checking the link above it says the GRO could have records but the parents would need to apply.

Has anyone tried this? Would I be able to write the letter on my grandmother's behalf and would she need to sign it etc?

Thanks again.

Hi again,

The baby was never given an official name. He was taken away from my grandmother straight away so she never got to hold him or even see him. In fact she had to very persistent to even find out that she had had a baby boy.

So yes, he was just taken away and she was never told what they did with him.

Unfortunately, it's highly unlikely that a hospital would still have records from so long ago.
I used to work in the records department of a hospital. Obstetric and certain other records were kept for 25 years; most non-obstetric records were destroyed 6 years after the last time the patient attended the hospital.

I don't know about the funeral director's records - it's certainly worth a try with the company which took them over.

Hello Rachael

Was the little one given a name or just taken away at birth?

Hi can anyone help find records for a stillborn baby?

I've been researching my family tree for the past 6 months so I'm relatively new to this. I'm trying to find out where a stillborn baby is buried.

My grandmother recently revealed that her first child was stillborn and she has never known where he was buried. The baby was stillborn sometime between December 1954 and the end of January 1955.

The only information we have is a receipt from the funeral director (W.Alderson and Son) dated 29th January 1955 which states: "To interment of baby at Ecclesfield Church. Removal from Firvale Infirmary. Cemetery fees." Payment was received on Feb 2nd 1955.

From this we know which church and a time frame to search but so far I have been unsuccessful in finding any trace of him. I have tried the following sources:

1. Burial records for Ecclesfield Church - searching for both a baby's grave and those buried in a 2 month period to see if any had a baby in with them.

2. stillborn burials for the area

3. I have tried to trace the funeral director's records but with no success. All I have managed to do is find them in the trade directory for that year but I know they went out of business.

Can anyone recommend where I can go from here?

Regarding the funeral directors, would records be likely to be kept with the business that took them over? What happens to records when a business closes?

I'm not sure if or how I could get hold of the hospital records either. Any ideas?

Any help or advice would be really appreciated as I am officially stumped :-S

Thank you.

Rachael
