pm from Lynne

"Just received Frederic's death cert. and yes it is Robert and Amy's son. How sad. He was the second child they had lost, not unusual I know in those days.
Have just sent for Ellen's death cert. She only lived a few months. "

Lynne

My tree would be useless to you .. I do not have the Dakins or Bollards in my tree..

What I have given you is from researching as per your brief in your opening post etc.

I was going to ask you if you wanted me to work forward to present day with your family and find a contact but as Jo has given you a number to call.. I will leave that avenue for you to discuss with her.

If you want me to search further for missing bits etc that Jo has not given you please ask.. and as you have sent me your tree I will take a look at it also and see if I can fill in any gaps.

I am assuming your tree is up to date..

and I will still see if I can get a photo for you of the grave at Karori.

Cheers Persie

Hi Persie
Just read the article about the ship taking the family out to NZ - Amy's younger brother Amos Bentham is also listed. Wonder if he stayed there as well. I thought I had him on the census here. I think there must have been Dakins there already as looking on the cemetery details there are Dakins buried much earlier than Robert and Amy.

Wow, thanks Persie
There is so much information coming through now I can't keep up. I have had some via Jo Gregory on Ancestry. As you say the Dakin/Bollards were quite well known. I've looked at the grave and the little wooden house. I would love to see some photographs; I'm sure somebody must have some.
Robert and Amy made a good life for themselves. It must have been incredibly daunting taking the steps they took for a better life. Many, many thanks. Jo has sent me a telephone number for one of the Bollard descendants which I will attempt to ring. I have a lot of information about Amy's family (which is also my family) so someone may find it useful.
Looking forward to looking at your tree.
Lynne

History of the Avondale Hotel

The first Avondale Hotel was built around 1860 on the corner of Rosebank Rd and Great North Rd but it burnt down. The second one was built on the corner of Wingate St and Great North Rd around 1870 but burnt down in December 1872. The third one was built there in 1873 and it also burnt down in 1888.

The fourth Avondale Hotel was built in 1889. It was made of plaster over brick and had kauri beams and woodwork inside.

After 1910 it was empty for a while until it became the Avondale Post Office in 1914. In 1938 it was sold and became a private hotel called the Avoncourt Hotel. It was demolished in 1967.

In 1967 a supermarket called Coopers was built on the site. The building was altered considerably in 1976 and became the Inner Circle Tavern (used to go there) Around 1991 the building again considerably altered and is now a group of shops including a bank and a cafe.

From me... Used to have a fantastic cafe and was really busy then the owners sold and it went downhill.. have not been back in ages will have to take a look.

January 1876

Mr and Mrs Dakin and child arrived on the ship Carnatic.

You can use snipping tool and snip from paper or change to computer generated text but then you have to proof read it as all sorts of scratches etc get translated into gibberish.

Louisa died in 1952 aged 89...

She was cremated but there is a photo of his grave and her name is on there as well but it is not a clear photo.

This is in Karori Cemetery in Wellington.. I will be in Wellington last week of August and could go and take a look and see if I can get a clearer photo of it.

Lynne - if you google "Robert Dakin" "new zealand" avondale there is a lot of info comes up. Looked like he had a good life there and was very well respected.

ADDED:
Here's just one example, a brochure of walks in the area which has a photo of a cottage he built in 1886

Thank you Chris and MarieCeleste, It certainly looks like Louisa actually joined her parents in New Zealand and that she married out there. Have edited the first post as suggested and who knows, maybe someone else can take the story a step further. Exciting!

Hi Lynne - I think it's the first time I've ever had a match for someone on that gravestone site!

Outgoing passenger lists from UK don't start until 1890 so they would have already been in NZ by then.

I'd suggest going to your first post and clicking "edit" - you could then amend the title of the thread to include "New Zealand". People from all over the globe help on these boards so someone who knows about relevant records may spot it and be able to help further.

Good luck!

Lynne

Marie-Celeste
You are amazing, perchance I put all the info I had into Google and found the photographs of the gravestone. It's now 1.00 am and I haven't got any further but it certainly looks like them. I've searched the passenger lists available but can't find them. I have put out a call for any descendents on the Auckland message board so hopefully I might get a response. It looks as if they had some relations out there as someone put up the rather elaborate gravestone. I wonder if daughter Louisa went out to join them? That's for another day.
Many thanks
Lynne
