Christina, following my message, OH has had a look and we're both pretty sure it's abscess but written abscefs, as they did then.

Must have been a very nasty one to be fatal, I guess he could have got a blood infection.

Thank you Marie (and your OH). That makes perfect sense now you've said it and I can now see the c above and the little squiggle underneath to show where the missing letter should have been.

I had read it as Alivess, which made no sense at all. :-)
