I am trying to find my relations Great Grandfather Joseph Garrard ( Garrod in the 1901 census) He was born about 1870 t0 1879 and died in 1930 in Romford, Essex. His Father was John. He married Sarah Ann Eliza Staff in 1899, born 1874 died 1933 also in Romford. They had children, Minnie Emily. Walter, May, Ellen Nellie, Doris Harriet, Daisy. Any help would be great please. Do know he was a Gas worker and was in WWII.

When he enlisted 14 May 1918 he was 42 years and 3 months old, a gas stoker.

He married Sarah Staff (spinster) 17 August 1902 in Romford.

He lists the following children:

(all born Romford)

He got the British War and the Victory medals.

It's all rather odd! This set of documents shows his enlistment 14 March 1917, it also includes copies of the documents above dated 14 May 1918 where he says he's never served before.

It looks as though he'd been released for a while for munitions work (seemed they particularly wanted gas workers) and then transferred to the reserves. He did serve in France.

According to these records he married Sarah Staff on 04 September 1898.

He lists children as:

Doris Harriett b 02 May 1910
Mabel May Ethel b 18 Mar 1913
Ivy Daisy b 07 Feb 1917

In the case of the marriage and births there are confirmation documents from Somerset House.

He married Sarah Staff (spinster) 17 August 1902 in Romford

The only marriage for those names was 1898

(think he gets muddled, 1911 says 3 children born, 2 living 1 died)

The man's age at death will be on the index...........so you can work out from that when he was born..............assuming the informant had accurate info

Thanks everyone for looking up facts for me. Yes I know he has got muddled !

On his marriage cert it says his Father was a Labourer and he was 19 making his date of birth abt 1879. They lived at Waterloo road, Romford then.

It gets even more or a muddled as my Father was born to Doris Harriet out of wedlock in 1932 and adopted my Nellie her sister and her husband who were unable to have children. So he then became a Seymour by adoption. So my only true blood line is the Staff's and Garrard's on his birth Mothers side.

Same with my Mother whom was also adopted but we do know her birth Mothers name but that is all.
