Hi Dea
Thanks a million ... I've looked at census' data in years either side and also cross referenced this to other family members ... and have found an occupation similarity to 'in law' relationships.
It took quite a lot of digging but by going through brothers and sisters and their spouses ... I got there eventually.

Many thanks also to PatChem, BrummieJan and Persephone for your contributions ... all greatly appreciated.

Kindest regards,
Michelle

What was meant by 'look at previous census's' was to look at this same person 10 years before and 10 years after on those census's and see what the occupation was then.

Do you want to tell us who this person was and what census you were looking at so we can see if we can find anything for you?

Hi BrummieJan

I looked at the census page for my ancestor - it had his occupation listed as mentioned previously ... but, I also looked up and down the page and on the pages before and after to check to see if there was anyone else (neighbours) who had an occupation listed which was either similar or in the pottery trade so that I could see whether 'Dipworker' was the same as 'Dipper' (which is listed on several websites)

Michelle, what do you mean by - 'I looked at previous census data alongside information on neighbours etc ... but nothing came up'? Do you mean you couldn't fins him, or he had no occupation listed?

On google just one of the many dictionaries etc on old occupations..

It had dipper but not dipworker.

Hi Dea

I looked at previous census data alongside information on neighbours etc ... but nothing came up (which is strange)

I have just posted a similar question on the FB page for Ancestry.co.uk and someone replied to me saying that they had several pottery workers in their history and said that Dipworker and Dipper are likely to be the same - someone involved in the pottery trade responsible for the glazing of items

Have you looked at the previous census and the later one to see what he did then?

Hi Patchem
Yes, I did look at that ... but couldn't find any further references

Have you looked at the occupations of neighbours in the censuses - is he from a pottery area?

Hello and apologies in advance if this is completely the wrong message board to be posting!
One of our ancestors has put down his occupation as 'Dipworker'. Does anyone know, would this be the same as 'Dipper' (pottery worker)? (http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/index.html)
Thank you
