I am trying to find any information on my GG, grand farther Patrick Mc Ghnay born about 1830 in Co. Derry, He married Bridget also from Co.Derry, all I know is that he was a farmer, and that he was present at his son's ( John Mc Ghnay) wedding in felling , Co Durham in 1877. No trace of him after then! Many thanks :-)

Hi Shirley, yes the surname is a bit of a puzzlement!
My maiden name was Mc Keeganey but on doing my family tree I have found many changes it began with Mc Ghnay, in 1881 Mc Gachan,1891 Mc Kaigray,1901 Mc Keeganey and many other varients inbetween and I cant seem to make any sense of it all :-S

Possibly its was how the name came across to the enumerator . accents played a big part and if the people couldn't read or write then theiy would have no idea how the name was being recorded on census /certs etc.

I think weall have variations of spellings in our trees
