Hi, I'm trying to find out more about my great grandmother SARAH ANN CALLOWAY who married JAMES BERRY (1857-1915) in 1884 and had 8 children, my grandmother Hilda being the youngest. They lived in Union Street in Rugby. In one census her birthplace says Horton Oxfordshire, other records say Banbury Oxfordshire. There is a possible Southam connection (the 1881 census has a Sarah Ann Calloway b. 1863/4 married to a James Berry in Southam). Also a suggestion her father could be a GEORGE FREDERICK CALLOWAY. But nothing confirmed.Any information would be much appreciated. Thankyou and good wishes, Nicky.

Could you just check your facts as if they married in 1884 she could not be married to James Berry on the 1881 census. There is a Sarah Calloway in 1881 born in Napton, Warwickshire, living in Southam., presumably the illegitimate daughter of Matilda Calloway. This appears to be a different girl to the one found by Pam.

I can't see a birth which fits. This is the only one in Oxfordshire which is even close:

Searching FreeBMD for Sarah Callaway, between 1860 and 1864, in Oxfordshire, with phonetic search on surnames, these are the only ones that come up:
Births Jun 1860 (>99%) Cowley Sarah Ann Banbury 3a 639 Births Sep 1864 (>99%) COWLEY Sarah Ann Woodstock 3a 576
Hornton is in the Banbury registration district, so both place-names mentioned in the censuses are correct.

Buying the marriage certificate would at least (presumably) give her father's name.

Wow, my pc crashed and by time I've got back you have all the info.
Like everyone else unable to find birth, Registration not compulsory so there may not be one.
There is a Sarah Ann Calloway born 1863 Southam district, she does not match your Sarah Ann who would have been born in the Banbury district.
The census for 1871 and 1881 fit. Giving Sarah born in Hornton and working in the Rugby area in 1881

If Charles Calloway was indeed her father (if we've got the right Sarah Ann in 1871), then she can't be the Sarah Ann Cowley born 1860, as Charles is unmarried in 1861:
